Samuel Barbosa é Professor da Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de São Paulo (USP) com pesquisa nas áreas de história do direito, análise comparada dos regimes de normatividade em perspectiva global; questões socioambientais.
É pesquisador de Produtividade do CNPq desde 2008. É Doutor em Teoria do Direito pela USP e Mestre em Ciências da Religião, com ênfase em Antigo Testamento, pela Universidade Metodista de São Paulo. Realizou pesquisa de pós-doutorado e atuou, em diversas ocasiões, como pesquisador visitante no Max Planck Institute for Legal History and Legal Theory, em Frankfurt, Alemanha (2013-2014; 2017, 2018, 2019).
Foi também pesquisador visitante na Universidade Livre de Berlim (2019), Universidade de Colônia (2022, 2023) e no El Colegio de México (2023). Foi líder de projeto pela USP e pesquisador principal do Maria Sibylla Merian Centre Conviviality-Inequality in Latin America (Mecila), entre 2019 e 2025. Foi presidente do Instituto Brasileiro de História do Direito (IBHD) entre 2016 e 2019. Dentre as publicações, merecem destaques o livro co-organizado com Manuela Carneiro da Cunha sobre direitos territoriais indígenas, citado pelo Supremo Tribunal Federal e outras Cortes no país (Manuela Carneiro da Cunha; Samuel Barbosa. // Samuel Barbosa is Professor of Law at the Faculty of Law of the University of São Paulo (USP). His research focuses on legal history, the comparative analysis of regimes of normativity from a global perspective, and socio-environmental issues. He has held a CNPq Research Productivity Fellowship since 2008. He holds a PhD in Legal Theory from USP and a Masters degree in Religious Studies, with a concentration in the Old Testament, from the Methodist University of São Paulo. He conducted postdoctoral research and served on several occasions as a visiting researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Legal History and Legal Theory in Frankfurt, Germany. He was also a visiting researcher at Freie Universität Berlin (2019), the University of Cologne (2022 and 2023), and El Colegio de México (2023). From 2019 to 2025, he served as principal investigator and project leader of USP at the Maria Sibylla Merian Centre (Mecila). He was President of the Brazilian Institute for the History of Law (IBHD) from 2016 to 2019. Among his publications, particular mention may be made of the volume on Indigenous territorial rights co-edited with Manuela Carneiro da Cunha, which has been cited by the Brazilian Supreme Federal Court and other courts in Brazil. At the University of São Paulo Faculty of Law, he has supervised more than eleven doctoral dissertations and twenty masters theses in the fields of socio-environmental studies and the history of regimes of normativity. He has received more than twenty-five research fellowships and grants from funding agencies in Brazil and abroad.
